Introduction

NYC

The National Youth Convention (NYC) in Kenya was conceived to raise the visibility of young people and to create an independent platform for articulation of their objective interests and vision for the nation. The Youth Agenda has hosted four conventions that have seen remarkable results between 1997 and 2008.

In March 1997, the Youth Agenda organized and convened the first National Youth Convention. Over 300 young participants from all walks of life and all corners of the country convened to chart the way forward on myriad of problems they experienced and to lay a foundation and ensure full participation of youth on matters related to social, economic and political development. Subsequent NYC II- 1998, NYC III- 2007 and NYC IV have seen

increased civic awareness among the youth, increased political engagement by young people, higher degree of organization among young people and advocacy for sharper and crisp agenda.

The following are some key achievements made as a result of the resolutions that were reached during the National Youth Conventions;

NYC I and II

  • The formulation of a National Youth Policy and National Youth Council Bill.
  • The establishment and implementation of a Youth Fund
  • The Set up of the Ministry of Youth Affairs.
  • Implementation of free primary education

NYC III

  • Youth have continued to seek political leadership in general elections. One of the resolutions was to field at least 180 young people to leadership positions and this has been achieved in parliament and local authorities

NYC IV

  • Participation of Young people in constitutional reform debates and processes. Young people have raised their voices on the contentious issues in the constitution to the Committee of Experts on the Constitution.
  • Formulation of a youth agenda and inclusion of the same in development and governance processes. Young people are increasingly getting involved in national processes.

NYC IV led to the formation of an NYC google group, a networking forum and platform for young people to address issues of concern to them.

The 2008 National youth convection held on september 19th and 20th at the Bomas of Kenya hall drafted the National Declalation Read more
